Most Masai Mara Adventures start with a flight to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Nairobi. After you’re your arrival, it is entirely up to you. In for an adventurous road trip, and ready to deal with a few bumpy roads along the way? Or would you prefer a quick and easy air transfer to the airstrip closest to your safari accommodation that you will be staying at? Below we`ll share some info to help you decide what`s best for you.
The recommended port of entry, when travelling to the Masai Mara, is Jomo Kenyatta International Nairobi. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport serves East Africa`s biggest hub, and as a result, many convenient flight options are available. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Air France, British Airways, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Kenya Airways, Qatar Airways, Lufthansa, and Swiss Airlines all operate flights from a multitude of major airports around the world. Also, many regional flight options are available.
The favored route for Masai Mara flight- in Safari is by flying from Nairobi Wilson Airport (WIL). From here it is a short flight of 50 minutes to the Masai Mara Game Reserve. Although road conditions have improved in recent years, these are still considerable stretches of road. There are several airstrips in and around the Masai Mara Game reserve for you to fly into. Airstrip depends on where you decide to stay during your safari.
Flights to the Mara are operated by airlines such as Air Kenya, ASL Kenya, and Safari Link. Upon your arrival at the airstrip closest to your accommodation, a safari jeep will be waiting for you to take you to your Masai Mara Safari Camp or Lodge. The good news is, right at the airstrip you will be in Masai Mara Game Reserve so you can start spotting wild animals by air during your flight and on the ground while in the safari jeep taking you to the camp/lodge.

The Most common way to travel to the Masai Mara By road is by booking a safari package the drive starts from Nairobi and allows you to include multiple other destinations in Kenya besides the Masai Mara. Extended classic Kenya Safari itineraries usually include overnight stays in Amboseli National Park and Lake Nakuru National Park. Although not recommended, the Masai Mara is accessible when traveling by (rental) Car. Please keep in mind that careful planning is necessary when driving yourself. A 4 by-4 jeep is required to access all roads throughout the year. Kindly note that we do not assist self-driving visitors.
Once you reach the Masai Mara National Reserve there are several entry gates. It is important to take the correct gate into the National Reserve to save time getting to your accommodation. There are five main gates leading into the Masai Mara National Reserve: Sand River Gate, Talek Gate, Musiara Gate, Ololaimuitia Gate, and Oloololo Gate.
Visitors to the Masai Mara Game Reserve are required to pay entry fees. All international visitors not staying in the Game Reserve will pay USD 80 per person for 24 hours. Visitors staying at the accommodation within the Masai Mara Game Reserve will pay USD 70 per person for 24 hours. Children aged between 3 and 11 years old pay USD 45 and USD 40 Per child per 24 hours respectively.
Children aged 3 years and below are not required to pay entrance fees.

Most international travellers require a visa when arriving in Kenya. We recommend applying for your visa before arriving in Kenya to limit the time spent waiting in a queue on arrival. A single-entry e-visa is valid for up to 90 days. The price of the e-visa is USD 51 per person. Traveling from the Masai Mara Game Reserve to Serengeti National Park.
Travel from the Masai Mara Game Reserve to Serengeti National Park will be via Kenya and Tanzania Isebania border.
Although flying between the Mara and Serengeti is not ideal, it is still the most time-efficient and convenient mode of travel. The issue is that one needs to cross the border between the two countries, but one of the airstrips in the Mara (and Serengeti) offers border facilities.
The two flight routes are available when traveling from the Mara to Serengeti.
The first route is offered by Safari link flight company. And coastal Aviation (Tanzania) allows travelers to fly from the Masai Mara to the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. Aviation (Tanzania), Allows travelers to fly from the Masai Mara Game Reserve to the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania.
This route is accessible through the Migori airstrip (on the Kenyan side for customs and immigration clearance and the Tarime airstrip (on the Tanzanai Side)., both near the Isebania border post. The connection involves a road transfer between the two airstrips, providing a relatively convenient option for guests wanting to experience both Masai Mara Game Reserve and Serengeti National Park.
Please note that this service may only operate during high season and requires a minimum of two passengers per flight. The schedule starts with Safariink picking up guests from various airstrips in the Masai Mara, and arriving at Migori at noon. After a road transfer via the Isabania border post for immigration clearance, passengers connect onto the Coastal Aviation flight to the Serengeti departing at 1400 Hours from Tarime.
The second, which we recommend, involves traveling back to Nairobi Wilson Airport and flying to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). This option incurs the least hassle, as flight operations are reliable, and there is no overland transfer required between airstrips, unlike the Migori / Tarime option.
Additionally, this option allows you to stay overnight in Nairobi to catch your breath after your safari experience in the Mara before continuing your safari in Tanzania.
